Why Choose AAF: From Industrial Air Filtration to Cleaner Air at Home

Why AAF?

Air filtration sounds simple — pull air through a filter, trap what you don't want breathing. In practice, the right solution depends on what's in the air, how much air needs treating, and what's at stake if filtration falls short. That's as true in a small bedroom as it is in a cleanroom.

AAF has been solving that problem since 1921, when engineer Bill Reed built the first Reed Air Filter for the automobile industry.[1] The company founded on that idea grew into AAF International, the world’s largest manufacturer of air filtration solutions which operates production, warehousing, and distribution facilities in 22 countries across four continents. [1]

AAF's regional arm, AAF Asia, opened its first office in Singapore in 1972, marking the company's entry into our region.[1] Over the following decades AAF Asia expanded into China, India, Thailand, Australia and Indonesia, growing to support customers across Southeast and South Asia.[1] Malaysia's role in that network dates to 2002, when AAF established its Manufacturing and R&D Centre here — now serving as AAF Asia's main Southeast Asia headquarters.[1] AAF Malaysia's strategic location helps to reduce delivery time for AAF filters in our region including air purifiers that can be purchased on our site.

AAF's filtration history also includes some unique milestones: AAF has supplied HEPA filters used on the International Space Station, and AAF filters were used on the lunar module for the Apollo 11 mission to the moon.[1] That's not by itself, the reason to buy an AAF air purifier but it reflects the engineering standard a century-old filtration company carries into every product it makes, including the small ones.

One Company, Many Environments

AAF's industrial filtration work spans a wide range of settings, not because the engineering changes dramatically between them, but because clean air matters in more places than most people assume.

Industries where AAF's filtration solutions are used include agriculture and tobacco, biotechnology, commercial buildings, compounding pharmacies, data centres, firing ranges, food and beverage, government infrastructure, healthcare, hospitality, livestock environments, microelectronics, museums and historic storage, pharmaceutical manufacturing, pulp and paper mills, refineries, schools and universities, transportation, and wastewater treatment.[2]

What connects them is a shared discipline: understand the contaminant, understand the airflow, and filter accordingly — whether that's a power plant protecting electronic equipment from harmful gases or a hotel ensuring their indoor air quality is healthy and comfortable.

Choosing an Air Purifier for Your Space

A home or business premise does not need cleanroom-grade filtration, but the underlying questions are the same ones AAF asks in every industrial application: what's in the air, how much space needs covering, and is the filter actually doing its job? A few things are worth checking before buying any air purifier.

True HEPA, not just "HEPA-style." True HEPA filtration is tested and rated to capture a defined percentage of fine particles at a specific size — not a marketing label. Both the AstroPure PT150A and the AstroFresh 240W/WR use an H13 True HEPA filter rated to remove up to 99.95% of ultra-fine particles.[3][4] The PT150A runs a four-stage filtration process through a 2-in-1 cylindrical carbon-and-HEPA filter, which also targets odours alongside pollen, haze and fine dust.[3]

Coverage area that matches the room - a purifier rated for a small bedroom will struggle in an open living space, and the reverse is wasted spend. The PT150A is built for rooms up to approximately 39 m² — a bedroom, a home office, a small living room — and its aerodynamic design, with 270° air inlets and a top outlet, is built around efficient airflow in that footprint.[3] The AstroFresh 240W/WR is rated for a considerably wider range, from around 27 to 229 m², because it's built to do a different job: it can draw in and filter outdoor air, not just recirculate what's already indoors.[4]

Fresh air vs. recirculation — know which one you're buying. This is the real difference between the two units. The PT150A recirculates and filters the air already in the room. The AstroFresh 240W/WR goes further, with four selectable modes: fresh air mode draws in and filters outdoor air, recirculation mode cleans indoor air, mixed mode does both at once, and auto mode adjusts the unit's performance automatically based on what its sensors detect.[4] For spaces where introducing and filtering outdoor air is important, the 240W/WR provides functionality beyond simple indoor-air recirculation.

Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation (UVGI), as a second layer. UVGI uses UVC energy to inactivate viral, bacterial and fungal organisms that pass through the filter media.[3][4] Both units include it, adding a layer of protection beyond particle capture alone.

Real-time air quality feedback - the PT150A displays indoor air quality through a multicolour ring indicator and pairs with the AAF Connect app over Wi-Fi for PM2.5 monitoring and remote control.[3] The AstroFresh 240W/WR offers the same Wi-Fi smart control, plus a filter change indicator so you're not guessing when it's time to replace the filter media.[4]

Ease of use - the PT150A's touch-sensitive control panel keeps day-to-day operation simple, and its compact, portable build means it can move between rooms as needed, a different kind of flexibility from the 240W/WR's role as a fixed ventilation and purification unit.[3]

Between the two, the choice mostly comes down to what the room needs: a compact, portable recirculating purifier for a bedroom or small room (PT150A), or a larger unit that actively manages fresh air exchange for a bigger or shared space (AstroFresh 240W/WR). Both carry the same filtration engineering AAF has built its reputation on for over a century — just scaled to fit everyday settings.
